We just finished five days of Camp Excel at the JVS. Camp Excel is for kids in the 4th through 7th grades. The video below was a Zoetrope Animation made by a student. A Zoetrope is a cylindrical device invented by a fellow name William Horner in the 1830's. Some people regard this device as an early form of a motion picture projector. A sort of Windows Media Player before Windows Media Player was. The students draw a 12-panel (frames) set of still images, load them into the Zoetrope, give it a spin, and then observe the illusion of motion. The illusion occurs because of a principle called "persistence of vision" where two or more images appear as one image when flashed rapidly. Persistence of vision was first demonstrated in England in the 1820's. Now you know all that.
If you would like to see more of these animations go to my Youtube channel by clicking here.
This yawn might be the only yawn observed by anyone during the five days that students engaged in a variety of activities while learning new technologies and other things fun.
