Pass the Bread, Please
Watch carefully as Casey demonstrates an improper reach across the table for a half loaf of bread. We had watched a 37-minute video that instructed us in table manners and etiquette a couple of days before having a Christmas luncheon at the Spaghetti Warehouse in Dayton, Ohio. An etiquette we learned was to politely ask for a food to be passed rather than commit to a long reach across the table.
To Casey's credit he was the first student at the table to unfold his napkin and place it neatly on his lap before the meal. In addition, Casey signalled the wait staff that his meal was completed by expertly placing his crossed knife and fork on his plate. Had I been grading for table manners, which I wasn't, Casey would have pulled his grade up to an A for the alpha--with his napkin, and the omega--with the crossed knife and fork.
This was an enjoyable meal, the converstion among the students was pleasant and cordial as you can observe in this short video. I learned that a couple of students at the table did some cooking at home--which they talked enthusiastically about--and the bread was almost good enough to excuse the reach.
The video and comment here were with Casey's permission.
