Our seniors spent some time studying networking after the first of the year and invited Randy Koeller in to help us out with preparing cat5 cable for connectors. This is tricky work. After using a stripping tool to remove a short length of the shielding, the individual color-coded wires must be separated and spread, folded neatly in order and inserted with just the right amount of pressure into a RJ-45 connector, then crimped into place. Few students accomplish an ethernet cable that tests out properly the first time. Mr. Koeller knew a few simple tricks that were very helpful. If you do this task about 50 times, you can get pretty handy.
I have since watched a few YouTube videos that give a good demonstration. We should have been filming Mr. Koeller, as he did better at demonstrating making an ethernet cable than anything I saw on YouTube. Mr. Koeller's son is in our class. That was the connection that led to our getting help with connectors.
